Model United Nations is an academic simulation of the United Nations where students step into the role of diplomats representing countries from around the world. Members research global issues, write position papers, and develop resolutions while practicing public speaking, diplomacy, and critical thinking skills.
At JDSS, the club prepares to attend the Southern Ontario Model United Nations (SOMA), a conference hosted by the University of Toronto Schools each May. Students represent assigned countries in various committees such as the General Assembly, WHO, UNICEF, and the EU, debating real-world issues like peace and security, climate change, human rights, economic development, and international law.
In weekly meetings, members collaborate in teams to research, prepare speeches, and practice debate skills in preparation for the conference.
