Royal Canadian Legion Public Speaking - February

John Diefenbaker Secondary School (JDSS) is proud to support the Royal Canadian Legion Public Speaking Contest as part of its commitment to student voice, confidence, and leadership.

The Public Speaking Contest, a key component of the Legion’s Youth and Education Program, provides students with a valuable opportunity to develop and showcase their public speaking skills. Participants are invited to select their own topic, encouraging creativity, critical thinking, and personal expression.

At JDSS, students in both the Intermediate Division (Grades 7–9) and Senior Division (Grades 10–12) are encouraged to take part in this enriching experience. Speech length requirements vary by grade level: students in Grades 7–9 must prepare speeches between 3–5 minutes in length, while students in Grades 10–12 are required to deliver speeches between 5–7 minutes.

Those interested in participating should connect with their English teacher for guidance and support.

The competition begins at the local branch level in early February and advances through zone, district, and area levels, culminating in the Provincial Finals in early May. Students should be aware that local Legion branches typically set submission deadlines in late January or the first week of February.

This is an excellent opportunity for students to build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and represent their school in a respected provincial program.
