Volunteer Hours

Community involvement activities provide students with valuable opportunities to develop skills, contribute to their communities, and explore personal interests outside the classroom.

Community Involvement Recognition Awards

Students who exceed the 40-hour graduation requirement may be recognized at Commencement through the Ontario Ministry of Education's Minister's Certificate of Recognition for Community Involvement.

Award levels include:

• Bronze: 50–99 hours
• Silver: 100–199 hours
• Gold: 200+ hours

These awards recognize students who go above and beyond the mandatory graduation requirement.

Eligible Volunteer Activities

Community involvement activities must meet Ontario Ministry of Education guidelines and be completed outside of scheduled class time. Examples may include:

• Community and charitable organizations
• Environmental initiatives
• School events and activities
• Recreational and sports programs
• Seniors' programs
• Youth leadership and mentorship opportunities

Students should consult Guidance before participating if they are unsure whether an activity qualifies.

Submitting Volunteer Hours

Students are responsible for tracking and submitting their completed volunteer hours.

To receive credit:

1. Complete the required volunteer activity.
2. Have the supervising organization verify your hours.
3. Submit your completed Community Involvement Activity Record to Guidance.

Hours should be submitted regularly throughout high school rather than waiting until graduation.
